All activities are led by experienced Baja naturalist guides and designed as soft eco-adventures — suitable for most fitness levels and ideal for multi-generational groups. Because Las Animas is accessible only by boat, the bay is completely private: no day-trippers, no other lodges, no through traffic. What you see from the water is exactly what Steinbeck and Cousteau saw — untouched coastline in every direction. Kayaking takes place in the calm, sheltered waters of Bahía de las Animas (beginner-friendly; typical outings 1–3 miles). Snorkeling is guided in crystal-clear water with visibility often exceeding 30 feet. No prior experience required for any activity. Children ages 5 and up are welcome; every family member chooses their own pace.
No Roads. No Other Buildings. No Other People. Just You and the Wilderness.
Most eco-lodges call themselves remote. Las Animas actually is.
Las Animas Ecolodge in Bahía de las Animas is accessible only by boat — there is no road, no highway, and no way to drive here. That single fact changes everything about the experience. When you step off the boat and onto the beach, you will not see another building. You will not see a power line. You will not hear a car, a generator from a neighboring resort, or voices from another group. In every direction — land, sea, and sky — you are looking at the same untouched wilderness that Jacques Cousteau called ‘the world’s aquarium’ when he explored these waters decades ago.
What Boat-In Only Actually Means for You
- Total visual wilderness: no other structures, no other lights visible at night
- Complete acoustic privacy: the only sounds are waves, wildlife, and your group
- No day-trippers or walk-ins: the only guests at Las Animas are the guests we brought here
- No light pollution: because there are no roads and no neighboring development, Las Animas sits in one of Baja’s true dark sky locations — the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on every clear night
- A protected bay: Bahía de las Animas is naturally sheltered, creating calm, clear water ideal for kayaking, snorkeling, and swimming even when conditions are rougher elsewhere on the peninsula
Western Comforts in a True Wilderness Setting
Wilderness doesn’t mean roughing it. Each of Las Animas’ 8 private beachside yurts includes a California King pillow-top memory foam mattress, a private ensuite bathroom with pressurized hot shower, solar-powered lighting, 110V outlets, fans, and a covered hammock deck overlooking the Sea of Cortez. A skylight roof lets you stargaze from bed.
The lodge produces its own safe drinking water on-site via a desalination plant — no hauled water, no bottled water dependency. Power is 100% solar with backup generators. Starlink high-speed internet is available in the main lodge. Fresh meals are prepared by our local Mexican chefs using ingredients caught from the bay that morning. The bar is stocked. The staff-to-guest ratio is 2:1.
You are completely taken care of — in a place where almost no one else can go.
All-inclusive packages from $3,495 per person — see schedule and pricing below.

The Ultimate Multi-Generational Family Adventure
Las Animas Ecolodge was built for the kind of trip that brings families together across generations — the one grandparents talk about for years and grandchildren never forget. Since 1989, we’ve hosted multi-generational families ranging from toddlers to grandparents in their eighties, all sharing the same pristine private beach, the same stunning sunsets, and the same unforgettable wildlife encounters in a wilderness accessible only by boat.
Because Las Animas is boat-in only, your family has total privacy from the moment you arrive. No day-trippers. No other lodges down the beach. No strangers at breakfast. With a maximum capacity of 16 guests and an average group size of 10, this is your family’s private wilderness for the entire stay.
Something for Every Generation
- Grandparents: Gentle beach walks, birdwatching (50+ species), hammock reading, sunset happy hours, and wildlife watching from shore — all at your own pace, with staff always nearby
- Parents: Kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling with sea lions, fishing, and guided island exploring in one of the most biodiverse marine environments on Earth
- Kids (ages 5+): Catching fish and eating it for dinner, campfire nights, kayaking their first solo strokes, spotting dolphins, manta rays, and sea turtles — and falling asleep under a skylight full of stars
- Teens: Independence to explore the beach and coves, learn to windsurf or paddleboard, night kayaking in bioluminescent water, and real dark-sky stargazing with zero light pollution
Book the Lodge Exclusively for Your Family
Las Animas is available as a fully exclusive private booking for families and groups of up to 16 guests. No other lodge in Baja can offer what this boat-in-only location provides: total wilderness privacy, all-inclusive catering, and dedicated local staff — exclusively yours. This is the “Ultimate Grandparent Gift” your family will talk about for decades.
Our best availability for multi-generational family bookings:
- April – May: Clear Sea of Cortez water, calm conditions, superb snorkeling and abundant wildlife
- November – December: Perfect weather, fewer crowds, incredible marine life activity
- Thanksgiving (Nov 23–28, 2026): Our most popular multi-gen family week — spaces limited, book early
- Christmas (Dec 21–26, 2026): Celebrate the holidays on a private beach in true Baja wilderness
- New Year (Dec 28, 2026 – Jan 2, 2027): Ring in the New Year under the darkest, most star-filled skies you’ve ever seen
All-inclusive packages from $3,495 per person — private group pricing available. See schedule below.
Traveling Solo, as a Couple, or in a Small Group?
Private group bookings are perfect for families — but they’re not the only way to experience Las Animas. When we’re not running a private group, we offer set departure dates that individuals, couples, and small groups can join. These open departures bring together a maximum of 10–12 like-minded guests who share a deep appreciation for nature, authentic experiences, and the kind of travel that’s nothing like a tourist resort.
What our guests consistently tell us: they arrived as strangers and left as friends. The shared experience of wilderness — the boat crossing, the sea lions, the campfire under the Milky Way, the fish you caught and ate for dinner — creates the kind of bond that only happens when people are truly unplugged and present together.
Set departures are ideal for:
- Solo travelers looking for meaningful adventure without going alone
- Couples celebrating an anniversary, honeymoon, or milestone — surrounded by wilderness, not resort crowds
- Friends (2–4 people) who want a unique shared experience without needing to fill an entire lodge
- Anyone who wants the full Las Animas experience and is open to sharing it with a small group of kindred spirits
See our schedule page for current set departure dates, or call us to discuss whether a set departure or private booking is the right fit for your trip.
What Our Guests Say
Soft Eco-Adventures for Every Fitness Level
Las Animas Ecolodge sits in the heart of the Midriff Island region of the Sea of Cortez — a stretch of ocean so rich in marine life that scientists have nicknamed it the ‘Galápagos of Mexico.’ Because the lodge is accessible only by boat, your activities take place in waters that see almost no other traffic. The bay is yours.
Our soft eco-adventure approach means every activity is designed to be accessible, guided, and genuinely enjoyable for first-timers, families with young children, and guests who want to be deeply in nature without extreme exertion. Activity level: Easy to Moderate. Suitable for ages 5 to 85.
Sea Kayaking in Bahía de las Animas
The calm, protected waters of Bahía de las Animas make it one of the finest kayaking environments on the Baja peninsula — ideal for beginners and those who’ve never held a paddle. Because the bay is boat-in only, you paddle in complete wilderness with no other structures visible anywhere along the shore.
- Typical outing: 1–3 miles through calm, crystal-clear water in a fully private bay
- Guided mangrove exploration — paddling channels teeming with birds and marine life
- Cove-to-cove island exploring — discover hidden beaches, tide pools, and sea caves
- Dusk paddling: watch the water turn bioluminescent as night falls — among the most magical experiences in Baja
- All kayaks, paddles, and safety gear included; no experience required
- Children ages 5+ paddle in double kayaks with an adult
Snorkeling with Sea Lions & Abundant Marine Life
The Midriff Island region around Las Animas consistently delivers 20–40 feet of underwater visibility in water ranging from 72–80°F in summer and fall. Guided snorkel outings are designed for all skill levels.
- Sea lion encounters in their natural habitat — they swim alongside you, completely unafraid
- Reef fish, manta rays, sea turtles, and dolphins visible from the surface
- Non-swimmers observe from the boat — no pressure, no judgment
- All snorkel gear and flotation vests provided; guides assist beginners in the water
Fishing, Hiking, Birding, Yoga & More
- Guaranteed-catch fishing: local captains know exactly where the fish are — guests regularly catch grouper, yellowtail, and more, then eat them for dinner that evening
- Island exploring: hike pristine Sonoran desert islands with our biologist guides — plants and landscapes found nowhere else on Earth
- Birding: 50+ species visible from the lodge, including blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and ospreys
- Clamming, paddleboarding, and windsurfing available from the beach
- Yoga and meditation on the beach — mats provided; guided sessions available on request
- Dark-sky stargazing: the Milky Way visible to the naked eye every clear night
- Ocean bioluminescence: on calm dark nights, the water itself glows — guests call it one of the most unforgettable moments of their lives
Las Animas: Baja Ecotourism Lodge vs. The World's Top Pristine Nature Destinations
You've been to the Galápagos. You've conquered Antarctica. You've hiked Machu Picchu. You've experienced an African safari.
But how much time did you spend getting there? How much did it cost including flights? And could you ever have those iconic locations entirely to yourself?
Las Animas, a premier Baja ecotourism lodge, sits in the heart of the Midriff Island region of the Sea of Cortez—the pristine, unpopulated marine and desert ecosystem that legendary author John Steinbeck immortalized in his writings. This UNESCO World Heritage site remains one of the world's most abundant and unique natural environments, where the Sonoran Desert cascades into crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life. Jacques Cousteau called it "the world's aquarium," and our Baja ecotourism lodge provides intimate access to wilderness that remains as wild and untouched today as when Steinbeck explored these waters.
Below, we compare our Baja ecotourism lodge experience to the world's most sought-after pristine nature destinations. All prices shown are per person and include estimated round-trip airfare from central United States gateway cities to the trip starting point. Why Our Baja Ecotourism Lodge Is The Smart Choice for Seasoned Travelers
The travel to bucket-list destinations often rivals the experience itself. While Antarctica requires 2-3 days including the Drake Passage crossing plus 2-4 hours of driving, Australia's Outback demands exhausting long-haul flights with 16+ hours of jet lag each way, African safaris require multiple connections through international hubs, and even Machu Picchu requires multiple connections through Lima and Cusco, our Baja ecotourism lodge delivers a UNESCO World Heritage-protected wilderness experience in just 8-9 hours from our San Diego gateway—with zero flights and zero jet lag.
What makes this Baja ecotourism lodge experience so special? The Midriff Island region of the Sea of Cortez—where our Baja ecotourism lodge is located—represents one of Earth's most exceptional marine ecosystems. This is the same pristine, unpopulated wilderness that captivated John Steinbeck during his famous 1940 expedition, detailed in "The Log from the Sea of Cortez." The unique convergence of nutrient-rich waters, dramatic desert landscapes, and over 30 pristine islands creates an abundance of wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. Blue whales (the largest whales on the planet), fin whales, dolphins, sea lions, over 900 species of fish, and more than 200 species of birds thrive in this remarkable ecosystem that Jacques Cousteau called "the world's aquarium." Your journey to our Baja ecotourism lodge also traverses the Valle de los Cirios, a protected biosphere reserve showcasing the diverse and unique Sonoran Desert with its iconic Cirio trees (boojum trees), towering cardon cacti, and endemic plant species found nowhere else on the planet—creating a spectacular land-to-sea wilderness experience.
When you factor in airfare costs from central U.S. cities, the value of choosing a Baja ecotourism lodge becomes even more compelling. A 6-day trip to Antarctica now ranges from $10,900-$20,150 per person (including flights), African safaris $7,650-$13,250, while Las Animas Ecolodge (TripAdvisor's #1 Specialty Lodging in Baja, Mexico with 200+ reviews averaging 4.8 stars) start at just $3,695-$3,895 per person including flights to San Diego—or $3,495 if you're driving from Southern California.
What Truly Sets Our Baja Ecotourism Lodge Apart:
- Unbeatable Total Value: Starting at $3,695-$3,895 per person all-inclusive (including flights to San Diego from central U.S.), or $3,495 for Southern California, Nevada and Arizona residents who drive, our Baja ecotourism lodge is dramatically less expensive than any comparable destination—which now range from $4,500-$20,150 per person including flights
- TripAdvisor #1 Rated: As TripAdvisor's #1 Specialty Lodging in Baja, Mexico with over 200 reviews averaging 4.8 stars, our Baja ecotourism lodge has earned its reputation for exceptional service, pristine location, and unforgettable wildlife experiences
- Same-Day Arrival: Leave San Diego in the morning, arrive at your beachfront yurt at our Baja ecotourism lodge by afternoon. No overnight flights, no airport hotels, no travel fatigue, no jet lag recovery
- Round-Trip Simplicity: While other destinations require 4-8 round-trip flights with complex connections and 2-4 hours of additional driving, our Baja ecotourism lodge requires zero flights—just a scenic drive and boat transfer
- Zero Environmental Travel Impact: Our Baja ecotourism lodge approach dramatically reduces your carbon footprint compared to international flights
- Intimate Groups: With a capacity of 16 guests and average group size of 10, our Baja ecotourism lodge provides personal attention and authentic wildlife encounters—far smaller than typical groups of 15-100+ at other destinations
- Private Group Bookings Available: Here's the game-changer—you can book our entire Baja ecotourism lodge (up to 16 guests) for your private group. Try doing that in Antarctica, the Galápagos, African safari camps, Patagonia, or Machu Picchu. Our Baja ecotourism lodge offers the rare opportunity for a truly exclusive wilderness experience without the complexity, cost, or travel time of distant destinations
- No Hidden Costs: Unlike many destinations where park fees, permits, and taxes add thousands to your final bill, our Baja ecotourism lodge pricing is transparent and all-inclusive
For travelers who've already checked off the Galápagos, Antarctica, African safaris, and Machu Picchu, our Baja ecotourism lodge offers the same caliber of experience with a fraction of the travel time and cost. You'll explore the same pristine wilderness that inspired John Steinbeck's writings—a place where the Sonoran Desert meets one of the world's richest marine ecosystems. You'll spend more time immersed in nature at our Baja ecotourism lodge and less time exhausted in airports or recovering from jet lag.
Sometimes the world's best-kept secrets are closer than you think.

Our Baja ecotourism lodge is a 14 mile scenic boat-in only journey from the nearest town, (Bay of the Angels). Our views here are pure untouched nature – vastly different from the typical Cabo and La Paz “Baja Experience” with tourist resorts, crowds, and noise.
Our Staff
Our staff consists of experienced Naturalist Guides, Baja biologist and local Mexican staff of boat captains, fishermen, chefs, and the cleaning care of our ecolodges, and bring so much to the entire Baja Spirit experience.
Our team is committed to providing our guests with safe guided experiences, outstanding service, mouth-watering fresh food, and an added slice of authentic Mexican culture.
Frequently Asked Questions About Our
Baja Ecotourism Lodge & Tours
Is Las Animas suitable for families with young children or older guests?
Yes — Las Animas is designed for all ages. We welcome children ages 5 and up, and regularly host multi-generational groups spanning grandparents to grandchildren. Activities are flexible: if young children tire of snorkeling, they can kayak, fish from shore, beachcomb, or play in the sand. Guests with limited mobility can enjoy meals on the main lodge deck, gentle beach walks, birding, and wildlife watching from the comfort of shore. Please call us with any specific accessibility or medical questions before booking.
Can we book the entire ecolodge privately for a family reunion, group trip, or retreat?
Yes — and this is one of our most popular options. We offer exclusive private lodge bookings for unified families or groups of up to 16 guests. When you book privately, your group has the entire beach, all 8 yurts, the main lodge, and our dedicated staff — exclusively yours. Because Las Animas is accessible only by boat, there is no possibility of outside visitors wandering through. Private bookings are available year-round, with best availability in April–May and November–December. Holiday dates (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year) sell out early — call us to hold your dates.
What if I want to experience Las Animas but don't have a group?
We offer set departure dates throughout the year for individuals, couples, and small groups who join an open trip alongside other guests — maximum 10–12 people total. These departures consistently bring together like-minded travelers who deeply appreciate nature and authentic non-tourist experiences. It’s very common for guests on set departures to arrive as strangers and leave as close friends. See our schedule page for current departure dates or call us to find the best fit for you.
What makes Las Animas different from other eco-lodges in Baja?
Las Animas is the only boat-in-only ecolodge on the Sea of Cortez — meaning no road access, no highway noise, and no passing tourists. You will not see another building from the lodge. You will not see another light at night. We sit at the intersection of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a National Marine Preserve, and the largest desert preserve in Latin America — the Midriff Island region known as the ‘Galápagos of Mexico.’ The lodge is 100% solar powered with backup generators, produces its own safe drinking water via on-site desalination, and sits in a dark sky location. We are a US-based, family and women-owned business operating since 1989. Maximum 16 guests per stay, average group of 10. This is not a resort — it’s a private wilderness with Western comforts.
Is it safe to travel to Baja? What safety measures do you have?
Safety is our first priority. All road travel uses well-traveled main highways in daylight only — we never drive remote back roads or at night. We maintain 100% real-time communications between Las Animas, our Baja lead guide, and our US office throughout every trip. The lodge has a satellite phone, first aid kit, and a doctor and clinic in Bahía de los Ángeles 45 minutes away by boat. In 35+ years of operation and thousands of guests, our safety record speaks for itself. Call us directly with any specific safety questions — we encourage it.
What is your worry-free booking and cancellation policy?
You may reschedule any reservation at no charge if official health or travel government restrictions are in place. The full value of non-refundable payments may be used as credit for a future trip within 24 months of your original tour date. Your travel voucher credit is transferable.
What are the guide qualifications?
Every Las Animas stay is led by expert Baja Spirit naturalist guides with deep knowledge of the local flora, fauna, marine life, and ecology of the Sea of Cortez and the surrounding Sonoran Desert. Our guides follow all Mexican government wildlife regulations and many have been with Baja Spirit for over a decade. They know these waters better than anyone.
What is the food like? Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Food is consistently rated the #1 or #2 highlight of a Las Animas stay. Our local cooks prepare all-you-can-eat ranchero-style meals, fresh-caught seafood, handmade tortillas, and Mexican home cooking — all using safe purified drinking water produced on-site. Many meals are ‘hunter-gatherer’ style: guests fish and snorkel for ingredients that become dinner. We fully accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary needs — please let us know when booking.
What are the accommodations like?
Las Animas features 8 private beachside yurts — glamping in the true sense. Each yurt includes a California King pillow-top memory foam mattress and twin bed, a private ensuite bathroom with pressurized hot shower, solar-powered LED lighting, 110V outlets, fans, a covered deck with hammock and Sea of Cortez views, and a skylight roof for stargazing from bed. Eco-toilets are Sun/Mar waterless composting systems — odorless and very effective. Starlink high-speed internet is available in the main lodge, with limited reach to the yurts. Our guests regularly say it’s far more comfortable than they expected.
Is Las Animas a good place for a digital detox?
One of the finest on the planet. Las Animas sits in a true dark sky location with zero light pollution, 14 miles from the nearest town by boat, with no neighboring buildings or roads visible in any direction. Starlink WiFi is available in the main lodge for guests who need to check in — but most find they naturally stop reaching for their phones because what’s happening outside is far more interesting. Bioluminescent night kayaking, campfires under the Milky Way, sleeping under a skylight full of stars: Las Animas offers the kind of deep nature immersion that makes screens feel irrelevant.
