Why Baja Spirit: What Sets This Place Apart

We are not a resort. We are not a tour bus company. We are a small team of naturalists, boat captains, and local fishing families — operating from one of the last privately held wilderness properties on the Sea of Cortez coast since 1989.

35+ Years & 5,000+ Guests

Founded in 1989, Baja Spirit has guided more than 5,000 guests through some of the most remote and biologically rich waters in the Americas. Founder Kevin Warren has been navigating this coastline since the 1980s — longer than most ecotourism companies have existed.

#1 TripAdvisor Specialty Lodge in Baja California

Hall of Fame status. 4.8/5 across 210+ reviews. 10–20% of guests return for a second or third trip — the clearest measure of a genuine experience.

Privately Owned Wilderness Property

Kevin and Carolina Warren personally own all 185 acres of Las Animas Wilderness Ecolodge, including the bay, beachfront, coastal coves, and Sonoran Desert hillsides. 95% of the land is maintained as undeveloped wilderness. The property is entirely surrounded by protected wilderness regions — UNESCO World Heritage Site, a National Marine Preserve, and the largest Desert Preserve in Latin America. No other buildings or lights are visible in any direction, as far as the eye can see. This is not a policy. It is a permanent personal commitment.

SEMARNAT & CONANP Permitted

Baja Spirit holds SEMARNAT certification for whale shark interactions and whale watching, and CONANP permits to operate in Baja California's protected island ecosystems. All vessels are fully insured under government permits. We handle all permits on your behalf — your experience is 100% above board.

WFR-Certified Guides & Starlink Connectivity

Lead naturalist guide Steve Sanders and founder Kevin Warren both hold Wilderness First Responder certification from Wilderness Medical Associates — the highest field medical standard for remote wilderness. Steve also holds First Aid, CPR, and AED certification from the American Red Cross. The lodge and transport van are both equipped with Starlink satellite internet.

The Sea of Cortez: The Aquarium of the World

Jacques Cousteau called it the Aquarium of the World. Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck spent weeks documenting its tidal life in 1940. UNESCO later declared it a World Heritage Site. The Sea of Cortez — and specifically the Midriff Islands region where Baja Spirit operates — remains one of the most biologically extraordinary marine environments on Earth.

The waters surrounding Las Animas Wilderness Ecolodge sit at the intersection of three of the most protected natural areas in the Americas: the Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California (UNESCO World Heritage Site), a National Marine Preserve, and the largest Desert Preserve in Latin America. Las Animas itself is 185 acres of privately owned wilderness — completely surrounded by these protected regions. No buildings, no lights, no development visible in any direction.

More than 80 years after Steinbeck’s 1940 expedition first stopped at Bahía de Los Ángeles — the same bay Baja Spirit guests depart from today — these waters remain as extraordinary as his account described. Because they are not easy to reach. Because the people who operate here have chosen to keep them that way.

In 1963, Jacques Cousteau filmed World Without Sun, documenting the extraordinary biodiversity of the Midriff Islands. These are the same waters Baja Spirit guests explore today.

Whale Shark Aggregations One of the world’s largest and most consistent seasonal whale shark gatherings — snorkeling encounters from September through October.
Gray Whale Nursery Lagoons The most accessible friendly-whale encounters on Earth — February and March during our combination Pacific and Sea of Cortez itinerary.
Marine Wildlife Density Sea lions, bottlenose and common dolphins, manta rays, mobula rays, and over 50 resident bird species.
Protected & Untouched UNESCO World Heritage waters · National Marine Preserve · Dark Sky location with zero light pollution.

All trips are all-inclusive, small-group experiences for 8–16 guests, and depart from San Diego, California.

Las Animas Wilderness Ecolodge is located in Bahía de las Animas in the Midriff Islands region of the Sea of Cortez, Baja California, Mexico. The property is boat-in only, with no road access. Guests reach it by a 14-mile panga ride from Bahía de Los Ángeles, which is approximately 7.5 hours by guided van with rest and scenic stops from San Diego, California.

Baja Spirit operates two seasonal wildlife tours and year-round ecolodge stays. Whale shark snorkeling is available September through October. Gray whale watching runs February through March on the Pacific Ocean as part of our Best of Baja combination trip. Stargazing at Las Animas “Dark Sky” Ecolodge, zero light pollution, Sea of Cortez, Baja California

Baja Spirit is a SEMARNAT-certified tour operator, recognized by Mexico's federal environmental authority for both whale shark interactions and whale watching. The company also holds CONANP permits to operate in Baja California's protected island ecosystems, including the Midriff Islands National Marine Preserve. All vessels are registered and fully insured under these government permits.

Peak whale shark dates from mid-September through late October typically book 12 or more months in advance. Gray whale watching tours for February and March also fill early. We strongly recommend booking 6–12 months ahead for preferred dates. All reservations are made directly by phone. Call Kevin or Tim at 619-421-2235.

Yes. Baja Spirit trips are designed for guests ages 5 to 85. Wildlife viewing from a panga boat, tide pool walks, and ecolodge activities require no special fitness level. More active options, including sea kayaking, windsurfing, island hiking, and desert hiking, are available for guests who want them. The activity level is easy to moderate and entirely at your own pace. Yurt accommodations include bathroom safety rails. Wheelchair access is not available.

Several things no competitor can replicate: Baja Spirit owns the land. Kevin and Carolina Warren privately own all 185 acres of Las Animas, keeping 95% as permanent undeveloped wilderness adjacent to a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They have operated in this ecosystem for 35+ years, hold all required government permits, employ local fishing families who have been with the company for 18 years, and hold TripAdvisor Hall of Fame status as the #1 Specialty Lodge in Baja California.

Yes. Baja Spirit operates exclusively in remote areas of Baja California, including Scammon's Lagoon and the Midriff Islands region, far from urban areas and with an outstanding 35-year safety record across 5,000+ guests. We travel only on main roads during daylight in well-maintained vehicles. The ecolodge is equipped with Starlink satellite internet, and all guides hold Wilderness First Responder certification.
