Why Baja Spirit: What Sets This Place Apart
We are not a resort. We are not a tour bus company. We are a small team of naturalists, boat captains, and local fishing families — operating from one of the last privately held wilderness properties on the Sea of Cortez coast since 1989.
35+ Years & 5,000+ Guests
Founded in 1989, Baja Spirit has guided more than 5,000 guests through some of the most remote and biologically rich waters in the Americas. Founder Kevin Warren has been navigating this coastline since the 1980s — longer than most ecotourism companies have existed.
#1 TripAdvisor Specialty Lodge in Baja California
Hall of Fame status. 4.8/5 across 210+ reviews. 10–20% of guests return for a second or third trip — the clearest measure of a genuine experience.
Privately Owned Wilderness Property
Kevin and Carolina Warren personally own all 185 acres of Las Animas Wilderness Ecolodge, including the bay, beachfront, coastal coves, and Sonoran Desert hillsides. 95% of the land is maintained as undeveloped wilderness. The property is entirely surrounded by protected wilderness regions — UNESCO World Heritage Site, a National Marine Preserve, and the largest Desert Preserve in Latin America. No other buildings or lights are visible in any direction, as far as the eye can see. This is not a policy. It is a permanent personal commitment.
SEMARNAT & CONANP Permitted
Baja Spirit holds SEMARNAT certification for whale shark interactions and whale watching, and CONANP permits to operate in Baja California's protected island ecosystems. All vessels are fully insured under government permits. We handle all permits on your behalf — your experience is 100% above board.
WFR-Certified Guides & Starlink Connectivity
Lead naturalist guide Steve Sanders and founder Kevin Warren both hold Wilderness First Responder certification from Wilderness Medical Associates — the highest field medical standard for remote wilderness. Steve also holds First Aid, CPR, and AED certification from the American Red Cross. The lodge and transport van are both equipped with Starlink satellite internet.
The Sea of Cortez: The Aquarium of the World
Jacques Cousteau called it the Aquarium of the World. Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck spent weeks documenting its tidal life in 1940. UNESCO later declared it a World Heritage Site. The Sea of Cortez — and specifically the Midriff Islands region where Baja Spirit operates — remains one of the most biologically extraordinary marine environments on Earth.
The waters surrounding Las Animas Wilderness Ecolodge sit at the intersection of three of the most protected natural areas in the Americas: the Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California (UNESCO World Heritage Site), a National Marine Preserve, and the largest Desert Preserve in Latin America. Las Animas itself is 185 acres of privately owned wilderness — completely surrounded by these protected regions. No buildings, no lights, no development visible in any direction.
In 1963, Jacques Cousteau filmed World Without Sun, documenting the extraordinary biodiversity of the Midriff Islands. These are the same waters Baja Spirit guests explore today.
